A series of programs designed to educate, entertain and motivate consumers about the wonders and importance of agriculture in western North Carolina.
Farmer Bill's Ag-venture
Watch mama pig with her piglets, the baby ducks on the water slide and enjoy hands-on barnyard activities for the children.
Mooternity Ward
Watch the miracle of birth at the “Mooternity Ward.” Agriculture students along with veterinarians will be with the animals to oversee, assist with the deliveries and narrate the birth events that occur during Fair hours. Thanks to fertility management techniques, organizers anticipate several live births each day; but, of course, the exact timing is still up to Mother Nature.
Agricadabra Presents: The Science of Ag
Brad Matchett is a magician who calls himself an educational agricultural specialist. The Agricadabra show brings agriculture to life in a Fun and Creative way.
The Barnyard
Visitors can also see hundreds of animals in numerous barns, as well as educational exhibits in the Barnyard.
Mobile Dairy Classroom
Teaching kids about the dairy industry is one of our priorities. Our Mobile Dairy Classroom is a traveling milking parlor, featuring a live cow and an oral presentation. Our trained instructors will demonstrate how to milk a cow, describe how milk goes from the farm to the consumer, and then answer questions from the audience. This is an innovative program that brings the dairy experience directly to children.
Livestock Competition
Agriculture is the backbone of the Mountain State Fair. Over the course of ten days, the Fair is home to more than 4,000 animals including dairy and beef cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, chickens, rabbits, and llamas. The Fair receives more than 3,400 entries from North Carolinians young and old entering their livestock in 38 competition categories.
Since the first Mountain State Fair, the reward has been ribbons, premium money and recognition. But the long-term effect of this healthy competition has been a steady improvement in North Carolina’s agriculture.
The Mountain State Fair plays an essential role in keeping agriculture one of North Carolina’s top industries.
