Four inducted into Mountain State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame

FLETCHER – Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler recently inducted four Western North Carolinians into the Mountain State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame, recognizing their important contributions to the fair’s livestock shows.

Glen “Corky” Boyd of Haywood County was a fixture at all regional livestock shows and youth events, and was heavily involved in the cattle shows at the Mountain State Fair until he passed away earlier this year. Boyd was the breeder of prize winning Limousin cattle and he provided many prize-winning cattle for youth participants over the years.

“Corky was a dear friend and he will be missed at the Mountain State Fair, but his legacy will live on here in the next generation.” Troxler said. Boyd’s wife accepted the plaque.

Dr. David Waldrep of Asheville is a regional field veterinarian for the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. He has checked thousands of cattle, goats, llamas, sheep, swine and poultry for diseases before livestock shows at fairs throughout Western N.C. Waldrep also regularly visits farms to ensure that animals remain healthy. He has 28 years of service to NCDA&CS and plans to retire soon.

“Dr. Waldrep is an important figure to livestock farmers in Western North Carolina and to anyone who shows animals at fairs throughout the region,” Troxler said.

Neal and Shirley Stamey, also of Haywood County, have been integral to the Mountain State Fair Beef Cattle Shows for 18 years. Neal Stamey served as superintendent of the show since the beginning and his wife was always involved in helping at the shows. They opened their farm to host showmanship clinics for youth participants until it moved to the Ag Center. Neal Stamey is active in numerous agricultural and livestock organizations. Shirley Stamey passed away earlier this year.

“The fact that we are inducting Neal and Shirley Stamey shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who has been involved in the livestock shows here at the Mountain State Fair,” Troxler said. ”This is a well-deserved honor for this couple.”
